Soil microbes will be on the menu of topics discussed at a hands-on workshop at Winiam this month.

Pauline Mele, Agriculture Victoria’s Senior Principal Research Scientist specialising in soil biology, will lead a presentation and soil pit inspection for growers and advisers on Monday 16 September at the Winiam Hall.

Dr Mele is a renowned microbial ecologist with expertise in the soils of grain production regions.

Workshop participants will gain a greater understanding of the complex microbial communities that support farming systems, and management strategies to preserve and promote them.

The free event starts at 10.30 am with morning tea, followed by a presentation at 11 am.

Attendees will then move to a local farm to view a soil pit, returning to the hall at 1.30 pm for lunch.

The event precedes the Wimmera Hay Days forum at Winiam, which begins at 2pm on the same day.
